Mouthfeel

According to the Oxford Languages definition, “mouthfeel” is defined as, “the physical sensation in the mouth produced by a particular food”. As technical as this sounds, that is one of the first things we may notice when eating a favorite dish. The smoothness of a scoop of velvety ice cream, that ooey-gooey cheese pull, crackle (of a nice corner piece) and bite of baked macaroni and cheese, the melt-in-your-mouth feeling that happens with a piece of solid chocolate. No doubt, eating a dish with good mouthfeel can bring nothing but a great eating experience and feel-good vibes in the mouth when enjoyed.

Nostalgia

There is always a dish made by one’s mother, grandmother, father, aunt and uncle, which beats all other similar dishes in the land! Many of our food favorites were introduced to us in our younger years, during holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions. As we get older, and go about with our daily lives, we may run into dishes that may be similar to Nana’s lasagna or Abuela’s empanadas. Many of these dishes may not meet the mark. However, when we encounter that dish that “hits”, the floodgates of good memories, love, culture and connection come in, soothing the soul. Nothing really compares to that feeling of nostalgia after taking that comforting bite.

Culture

Culture has the ability to bring groups of people together and build communities. Culture can be expressed in many ways. Music, art, language, dance and food have powerful ways of expressing the essence of cultures around the world. The aroma, texture, and even the preparation of a dish can connect people with those that came before them, which in a way, can make us feel more connected to the essence of ourselves. A favorite dish has a way of bringing people “home” and giving a warm sense of welcome and belonging.
